Artist’s Bio:

Zoe Grashow Klein is an internationally published novelist, poet and storyteller. She received her Doctorate of Divinity from Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion, and has served over twenty-five years as a rabbi and spiritual leader. This summer she is transitioning from her full time work in the rabbinate to pursue creative projects in writing and art.

Zoe Grashow Klein is the author of the short stories collection Candle, Feather, Wooden Spoon (CCAR Press, 2023) which she also illustrated, the novel Drawing in the Dust (Gallery Books, 2009), the children’s story The Goblins of Knottingham: A History of Challah (Apples & Honey, 2017), and The Scroll of Anatiya (Wipf and Stock, 2009). Her poems are used in houses of prayer around the world.

She is currently building Noah’s ark out of poetry and illustrations, writing one poem for every species of mammal on earth. She’s done 800 so far, and has about 5,000 to go! You can follow her progress at zoespoetryark.substack.com

My father Jimmy Grashow has an amazing series of woodcuts that are interpretations of flies. For example, his Butterfly is a stick of butter with wings. He also did a Fruit Fly, Horse Fly, House Fly, Pants Fly (a zipper!), Pop Fly, Spanish Fly, Super Fly, Fly Ball. In looking at his work after he passed, I wanted to add to his flies by creating a “Time Fly.” Because, we all know Time Flies, but when we spend it together, how it shines!

I made this out of my father’s favorite material, cardboard, but with my own twist.

NOTE: I tried to finish this piece in time to submit it, but I couldn’t. I still plan to add gold highlights to various parts and to seal it all so that it can last! It has a lot of time references, its body is an hourglass, its hands are Chinese numbers pointing to clock positions, its crown is a Roman numeral 12. If the artwork sells, all the money would be for the Library.
