Artist’s Bio:

Now a professional artist, Jocelyn earned a BA in fine art from Skidmore College and a MFA in printmaking from UMASS, Amherst. After graduation she started a business creating portraits of horses and dogs, attending many east coast horse shows to advertise her work. Her exceptional ability to draw has fueled her versatile career and she is internationally renowned in the equine industry. She has completed more than 2000 commissioned portrait of horses and dogs and her work is included in many private and corporate collections including the Kentucky Derby Museum. Her work has been on the covers of many publications including The Chronicle of the Horse and the magazine of the American Veterinary Medical Association. She is still accepting commissions and recently she was asked to paint four life-sized paintings of horses, one for interior designer Darryl Carter.

In 1990 Jocelyn’s focus evolved to include paintings of Nantucket. She became a member of the Art Association of Nantucket and also began exhibiting her work at the Nantucket Looms and Gallery at Four India (which focused on her portraiture). Jocelyn has been the recipient of the Art Association of Nantucket’s Frank Swift Chase award for plain air painting as well as the William Welch award for painting. The beauty of Nantucket, especially the old Nantucket she remembers from her childhood, provides endless inspiration for paintings and drawings. Her work includes buildings and places that are gone forever as well as current harbor boats and cottages. Structure (buildings, boats, animals, even a fence) is always a part of her paintings and drawings including structure that forms in a landscape with light and shadows, diagonal lines and opposite diagonals that occur in the clouds in the sky. All of this is taken into consideration when starting a painting. The resulting composition is, therefore, more complex in its seeming simplicity.

Jocelyn’s website is www.urbanvisualmedia.com and features her portraits as well as Nantucket paintings. She also has a line of greeting cards for horse and dog lovers featuring the humorous side of life with animals. There are also portrait cards and Christmas cards on the site. Jocelyn has illustrated four children’s books.
